Nappy Change Area Cleaning Checklist for Childcare Centres

Quick answer
Clean the nappy change surface after every change with detergent and water, and disinfect it if urine, faeces or blood got on it, then perform hand hygiene even if gloves were worn. At the end of each day, clean the whole change table, steps, rails, walls and taps, and clean and disinfect nappy bins inside and out. Infection-control nappy changing is one of the five key recommendations in Staying Healthy (6th ed.).
Nappy changing is one of the most common ways gastro and other faecal–oral infections spread in childcare. The NHMRC’s Staying Healthy guidelines make infection-control nappy changing one of their five key recommendations — and the cleaning step after each change is where good procedures often slip on busy days.
In this guide
Set up the area to make cleaning easy
- A change table with an impervious, intact surface — replace split or cracked mats
- A hand basin within reach, separate from food preparation and bottle areas
- Gloves, wipes, paper liners, detergent and disinfectant within the educator’s reach (and out of children’s)
- A foot-pedal nappy bin with a liner, emptied at least daily
- Steps or a safe lifting method so children can climb up with help
After every nappy change
- 1
Dispose
Put the nappy, wipes and paper liner in the pedal bin. Remove gloves carefully and bin them.
- 2
Hand hygiene for the child
Wash or wipe the child’s hands, dress them and return them to the room.
- 3
Clean the surface
Clean the change mat with detergent and water (or a detergent wipe) and dry it.
- 4
Disinfect if soiled
If urine, faeces or blood touched the surface, disinfect after cleaning using your service’s disinfectant at the label strength.
- 5
Hand hygiene for the educator
Wash hands with soap and running water, even if gloves were worn.
Paper liners reduce how often the mat is soiled, but they do not remove the need to clean the surface after every change.
End-of-day nappy area clean
- Clean the full change table: mat, sides, edges, safety rails and storage
- Clean steps and handholds
- Clean and disinfect the nappy bin inside and out, including the pedal; replace liner
- Clean the hand basin, taps and soap/paper dispensers
- Clean walls and splashbacks around the change area
- Mop the floor last with yellow (or dedicated) equipment
- Restock gloves, liners and wipes

Common mistakes
Skipping the clean after a “clean” nappy
Wet nappies still leave urine on the mat. Clean after every change.
Disinfecting without cleaning
Disinfectant cannot work through residue. Clean first, then disinfect.
Using the change basin for bottles
Keep nappy and food areas completely separate.
Overfilled bins
Bins should be emptied at least daily and never left overnight full.
Educators handle after-change cleaning; our childcare cleaners take care of the full end-of-day nappy area clean and bin sanitising every night.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to disinfect the change table after every nappy change?
Clean it after every change. Disinfect after cleaning whenever urine, faeces or blood has contacted the surface.
Should educators wear gloves for nappy changes?
Yes, disposable gloves are recommended, and hand hygiene is still required after removing them.
How often should nappy bins be cleaned?
Empty them at least daily and clean and disinfect them inside and out at the end of each day.
